Saturday 1st September 2018

Fine and sunny start to the day here in Turangi today. A nice frost as well. A cracker start to the 1st day of Spring. No wind as of 9:00am. The Tongariro is clear and fishable.

Well!! We have made it to Spring.  Some of the last few days have been nice and warm and it looks to be a good start to Spring, however being a long term resident of Turangi we can get some of our nastiest weather from now until the end of November. We sometimes get a nice start and it lulls you into thinking .... Summer is approaching ... and then  ... WHAMO !  Don't forget that Lake Otamangakau opens on 1st October and I have been up there on opening day and it has been horizontal sleet !

With September rolling around usually towards the end of the month you may start to see more and more mayflies hatch. Possibly around the 18 -29th we can be hit by some good Equinox winds. Keep your eyes peeled from now on though.  If conditions are right and the Mayflies hatch .... they hatch.

Lake Rotoaira opens today so this gives you a bit more flexibility to fish if the rivers blow out due to high water.

(Above) Three anglers fishing just below the S.H.1 road bridge at about 1:00pm today. Just as I was leaving one of the anglers hooked a fish.

(Below) Looking downstream to the lower Bridge Pool.  Not so many anglers on the river today from what I could see.

(Below) I was walking to work today on my daily 3 minute commute and lying on the footpath was this Monarch butterfly which had been zapped with the frost.  Quite a coincidence seeing this on the 1st day of Spring. I took it to the shop, warmed it up and about two hours later it flew off.
