Thursday 3rd May 2018

Fine and sunny with a good frost to start the day. No wind as of 9:00am.  The Tongariro is fishable today.

(Above) I went for a bit of an explore on Tuesday. This is the track that crosses the washout channel that take you to the Boulder Reach.  This channel is now well cut from the tail of the Cliff Pool and comes out about 50m upstream from where the Poutu Stream meets the Tongariro. Most places I went to there was like a sticky fine silty mud lining the banks of the river in the shallow water.  Every time you wade if wafts up in a massive cloud and colours the river around you.

(Below) The fully formed channel from the tail of the Cliff Pool looking down towards the Poutu Stream.  I don't think it will be too long until the river actually flows through here. A few more good floods and it will most likely start the trickle.

(Below) Fishing the tail of the Cliff Pool on Tuesday.  The water was quite coloured.  The channel that has cut through to the Poutu Stream is just behind me to the right of the photo.

(Below) I ended up having quite a good day but boy did I lose some fish.  They kept taking my flies and then shake ... shake .. nothing !  I figured something must be wrong so re-rigged with a bigger hook and then proceeded to land three fish in four casts !  The nymph I was using originally was only a size #16.

(Above & Below) I landed these fish about half an hour apart.  The top one took the nymph and the bottom one took a woolly bugger wet fly.  I wasn't sure but I thought the fish may be the same one.
