Overcast with steady rain falling.  No wind as of 9:00am.  The Tongariro is clear and fishable as of 9:00am.  Perfect for either wetlining or nymphing.

This rain will definitely bring some more fish up-river.  Fingers crossed we don't get too much rain to flood the river again. This has been a very wet year.  The river has been up and down like a yo-yo this year.  A similar year was 2008 when we had about 13 good floods in the river. This made it a bit harder for anlgers to lock onto where the fish were as the pools kept changing.  Hopefully the river settles a bit over the next month or so.  Plenty of fish still run well into the Spring.

Some good reports from fish getting caught at the Tauranga-Taupo River mouth the other night. One would suspect the fish moved just prior to the rain.

The picture and email below is thanks to Jason from River Birches.  Jason writes:

Jared,

Here is nice fresh run rainbow catch while wet-lining in the Tongariro’s middle reaches late Thursday afternoon.  Thanks for recommending which flies to try. They were spot on. Plus the fish were right where you said they would be. I am looking forward to this weekend as it seems like lots of fresh run fish are now here.

Regards,
