Fine and sunny. No wind as of 9:00am. The Tongariro is clear and fishable.

With the lake level dropping a few anglers have reported heading out to the Waimarino Mouth for a fish.

Wow !!! Did it absolutely pour down on Saturday night.  The rain was lashing the windows of my house.  Of course upon waking on the Sunday the Tongariro had come up and flooded. The river dropped very quickly on Sunday afternoon.

I decided to head out on Monday knowing that the river may contain some colour.  I had a burn with the wetline and caught nothing apart from small sticks .... one every cast, then had a go with the nymph. Of course right where I had been wetlining I hooked a fish on my first cast with the nymph !!!

The water contained a nice colour to it but I was amazed that by the end of the day the river had cleared quite a lot. Most fish took the glo bug but I got three on a flashback pheasant tail.  Think I hooked about thirteen or fourteen.  Lost only two or three that I can remember. Not quite the really nice silver running fish of a few weeks ago. Also I only saw "two" other anglers for the whole day but about 20 Lions supporters. The other thing I noticed yesterday was the Sandflies were out in force and kept attacking my hands.

Also the new Simms Headwaters boots have bedded in nicely and the studs make a huge difference with remaining vertical in the river. They are really comfortable. The thing I quite like is the toe cap area. This protects my toes from water squashing down on my toes to make them colder.  This doesn't happen with these boots.

(Above & Below) Most of the fish I had caught weren't like the super fresh ones of a few weeks ago.
