Sunday 4th November 2018

Fine and sunny start to the day here in Turangi today.  A VERY STRONG gusty SW is blowing as of 9:30am.  This is expected to ease during the day. The Tongariro is clear and fishable.

Conditions are making it a little tough for anglers to fish with this strong wind.  Anglers are reporting plenty of fish in the river which should mean plenty are getting caught however quite a few anglers in the shop over the last week have had trouble hooking up.  They say that they are standing in the water and half a dozen fish or so are in the slipstream of their legs.  They are reporting that they are not interested in anything apart from the "jiggy jiggy" that they are doing with each other.

The trouble I have found over the years is the fish you can usually see are the harder ones to catch and my advice to anglers is have a crack at them but don't waste time on them. Fish for the ones you can't see. Skillful anglers will still be dealing to the fish and there are still some nice fresh ones getting caught.

A few more anglers are venturing to take out dry flies with caddis starting move for the evening rise.
