Fine and sunny start here in Turangi today with a GOOD frost. No wind as of 9:00am.  All rivers are fishable.

Wham!!! We seem to be straight into Winter with that cold Southerly Blast.  I've had the fire going  hard out over the last week ... not even contemplating getting into the waders first thing in the morning ... must be showing my age ;-)

May usually heralds a change in the weather ... the days are noticeably shorter as well. Those who get out at first and last light usually do quite well.

The bright clear sunny days should see fish trickle through the rivers but once a weather front approaches and the barometer starts to lower then fish seem to sense this and move with impending rain.

I really enjoy the nice calm frosty sunny days of Winter .... taking a good lunch with a thermos of hot coffee or tea and having a break on the river bank to enjoy the sunshine and also to enjoy the fact that you are not at work.

River mouths are worth a look prior to approaching fronts to intercept the fish before they move into the rivers.

A reminder that the upper reaches of all fishable rivers close at the end of this month (31 May).

A reminder that Lake Otamangakau closes at the end of this month too (31 May).

Lakes Kuratau and Lake Rotoaira stays open until the end of June.
