Overcast with some rain falling at times here in Turangi this morning. No wind as of 9:00am. The Tongariro is fishable this morning.

I managed to get out and about on my days off on Tuesday and Wednesday and had a good look around.  I didn't come across too many anglers on the Tongariro and enjoyed fishing most places in a bit of peace and quiet.

There seemed to be plenty of fish around.  I was nymphing and most fish took the bomb.  A few skinny recovering fish are feeding up on mayflies and caddis at the moment.  I tended to find the bigger and fresher fish took the glo bug with the others preferring the naturals such as hare and coppers and pheasant tails. It was nice fishing in sunshine for a change.

On the Wednesday I ended up seeing a good Mayfly hatch and fish were rising so I changed to a dry fly and managed to have 5 fish come up to the dry in a short space of time. I only landed two !  A bit rusty for the first time this season !!  You had to watch carefully for the rise and most anglers would have been oblivious to the fish rising.  Also I had to sometimes wait in between wind gusts.

There are still some very nice fresh fish moving up the Tongariro but you will now start picking up a few spent ones as well.  These spent ones will be the ones you will have a bit of fun with using the dry fly.  Quite a few years ago we had a season where fresh run fish were coming to the surface and taking the dry fly. Hopefully this year will be similar.

(Above & Below) It was good fun catching these fish on a dry fly the other day. I like it when you make a cast, the fly hits the water, you see the post of the fly .... it drifts a few meters and then "WHAMMO!!" the fish inhale the fly !
