Friday 7th April 2017

Fine and sunny here in Turangi today.  No wind as of 9:00am.  The Tongariro is flowing at 100 cumecs but Andrew reports fishable. This should be great for the weekend for those wanting to head this way. The weather looks great for the weekend, so if you managed to come out of the "Big Wet" ok and don't have any damage to repair then it should be a good weekend .... if the roads are open and you can get here.

I just received an update about the Tunnel Inspection.  This has been extended. See detail below.

Genesis Energy has been undertaking an inspection of the Tokaanu Tunnel since Monday 3rd April. High rainfall and ground water levels has meant part of the tunnel could not be inspected and the project has been extended until Tuesday 11 April to complete the inspection (noting that if all goes well the project may conclude earlier). During this period no water will be diverted from the Tongariro River into the Poutu Canal and Lake Rotoaira.

Flows will remain higher in the Tongariro River below Poutu Intake during this time. Visit for flow information.

Please be aware that the flows are subject to natural fluctuation (e.g. weather events) and generation flow changes. Please feel free to share this information with other river users (i.e. via website or social media pages).

If you have any questions or require further information, please contact Abbie Fowler on (07) 984 1130 or

We had Howard in the shop yesterday who was keen to fish the Tongariro.  He had heard over the years that when it is high and coloured then it is possible to catch huge brown trout. He was one of only two anglers in the shop yesterday that were keen to give it ago.  We said "if you don't go, you don't know".  I said to him as he walked out the door that we would like the photo of the fish he gets. Well, later in the afternoon he walked in with this fish ! He was still shaking !

(Above) Howard from Pohangina with a good sized Tongariro brown trout that he caught in about 130 cumecs of water in the Tongariro yesterday afternoon around 2:30pm. His efforts of going were rewarded.

(Below) We weighed the fish at 8.75 lbs on some Salter Scales.  Now, another thing that is bugging us in the shop is all of these anglers who "lose" big fish and tell us how much they weigh Peter Carty says "if you don't weight it don't say it".
