Overcast with humid feel. Light drizzle falling at times. No wind as of 9:00am.  The Tongariro is clear and fishable.

We've got quite a few tourists showing up now wanting to head out fishing. Quite a few a few are looking to spin fish.  Just a reminder that all rivers are fly fishing with a couple of exceptions - see the Taupo Fishery Regulations for more detail.

Also you may spin fish anywhere in Lake Taupo so long as you are 200m away from a river mouth. You may spin fish in Lake Otamangakau, Lake Kuratau, The Tokaanu Tailrace and Lake Rotoaira ( you also need a Rotoaira permit extra to your Taupo Fishing Licence - Available from Turangi Information Centre and the Office at the Rotoaira Campground and the Creel Tackle House)

Another regulation is that you are not able to use trebble hooks in the Taupo Fishery, only one single hook per lure.

Also with softbaits you are able to use them so long as they have no scents or chemical fish attractants.

You may not use a hook with a gape greater than 14mm between the point and the shank.

You may also use bubble floats with flies but only in spin fishing areas.  Just remember that in  " Fly Fishing Only " water you must be using a Fly Rod, Fly Reel and Fly Line  ( you can't use a spinning rod with a fly attached ).

Also remember that the upper reaches to the Taupo rivers open on 1st December not the 1st October like other areas around New Zealand.

I am going to try and get out and do a bit more spinning over the Summer. It kind of opens up a whole new side to fishing and if you use your imagination to create new techniques then it can be worthwhile.

The thing I like with having done the spin fishing that I have done is that you can get a cast in with bushes behind you and if you are pretty well versed with fly fishing techniques then you can use these to cross over with the spinning rod.

Hi Sporting Life,

Fishing is on. It has been a good morning for both Trevor and Amanda Robertson. It is all smiles with their fresh run rainbows before 10AM Friday. The Tongariro seems to be full of fresh run fish.
