Fine and sunny with some cloud about.  The temperature hovering around zero degrees this morning. No wind as of 9:00am. The Tongariro is flowing at around 35 cumecs and is highly fishable.

With the school holidays under way there have been the odd groups of parents and kids turning up to fish.  It is good to see the youngsters wanting to get out and enjoy the day away from " Technology ".  Some may start the day up at the local Skifield and end the day on the river or spend a day fishing and a day skiing. Usually when the weather is good the skiing comes first as you can always fish in the rain ..... the fish don't mind getting wet ;-).

The river has dropped right back in volume from the flush a couple of days ago so it should definitely be well worth fishing today.  The use of the wetline or the nymph should both be productive. If there is any colour to the water then this will aide you to catch fish .... don't wait until it gets too clear.

Fish reported hanging off the Delta last week, so one would assume that they may be in the river somewhere ..... better go looking.

(Below) Snow covering the summit of Mt Pihanga this morning. Just remember that we are only just over 7 weeks until Spring starts !!!  Better make sure you have a few Mayfly dries tied up and also a few wee wets !

(Below) Neil Cunnington is back from Oz for a bit of action in the Tongariro River.  He turned up late yesterday afternoon but I think had to get the groceries before he could take the rod for a burn !!

He sent in this email this afternoon.  Neil writes:

Had a sleep in before heading out for a lash this morning, picked up three and kept a nice silver hen for tea. Caught up with Andrew and met Josh, there is something poetic watching the spey in action, one day perhaps.

Heading out this arvo and might swing some rabbits?? Flow is very fishable and the colour is great.

(Above) A nice solid fish caught nymphing by Neil.  I really like the solid look of these fish and the nice red colour on the gill plate.
