A fine and sunny start to the morning here in Turangi this morning. Andrew said a good frost had to be scraped off his car windscreen. A light breeze as of 8:45am.  The Tongariro is clear and highly fishable.

Once again the clear skies have come out.  This will slow things down for a few anglers but I have to reiterate that this is a usual occurrence having witnessed these same conditions over the last 17 years I have been in the shop. My advice is get out at first and last light with the glo bug (these days my eyes are glued shut until the sun is well up over the yardarm - I let all the keen anglers down to the river to have a crack and by the time they have near frozen to death I have just got up, have a leisurely breakfast and head out to the river about 10am) and to fish all day long but you might have to be in for a few fly changes to entice the fish to take something. Also if you have been through the pool with four different patterns and still had no luck .... then head somewhere else.  Also if you fish one pool for a long time you may not get anything and then all of a sudden it is all on .... depends if you want to wait all day for that to happen or to try somewhere else?? These conditions will sort the men from the boys. In the past I have fished these conditions like you would in the summer.

We had some anglers call into the shop yesterday afternoon to top up on supplies.  They had been fishing at the Delta and had a great time with some really nice conditioned fish caught. Heave and Leaves were the flavour.  They were buzzing about the size and quality of the fish caught.

(Above) Peter Carty was down at the S.H.1 road bridge this morning and took this photo of a few anglers fishing away in the chilly conditions. (Below) This photo is a bit blurry as he had forgot to take his glasses ;-) but shows one angler way down in the "Bridge Pool of Old". It also shows we have a nice sunny day.
