Fine and sunny start to the day here in Turangi today.  Gusty strong SW wind blowing as of 9:00am ... this may ease later in the day. The Tongariro is highly fishable. Most anglers through the shop over the last few days have been heading out for the evening rise.  Mostly using Sporting Caddis or Goddards caddis. A few anglers have also taken out the green beetle dries as well. Cicadas were heard last week however temperatures dropped over the last few days with yesterday evening getting down to about 13 degrees celcius and COLD!!.  Usually this type of pattern happens every year with the cicadas just coming online then we get a cold snap which shuts them down again and they usually then start really making an appearance mid January.  Sometimes there is only a two week window in February where the fish really go for them .... other years you may get a two or three month window however they are very susceptible to the cold.

(Below) The Tongariro River just upstream of the Major Jones Swing Bridge at 8:30am this morning. Fine and sunny for a change but the wind is howling.
