Fine and sunny here in Turangi today ... or should I say blue sky!! No wind as of 9:00am.  The Tongariro is flowing at a highly fishable 32 cumecs.

I managed to get out for a flick on the Tongariro River yesterday. I don't think I have been fishing for a month and a half.  Having had all my chores done at home I had a free day. Boy did it rain on Sunday night !!  I woke thinking the river was going to be flooded but checked the levels and the river was flowing at about 7 cumecs!  Bonus.

I got to the river to find a bit of colour in it but it wasnt too bad.  I basically nymphed most of the day. It was a strange day. I think I hooked about 14 fish and only landed 8.  I kept dropping fish.  I hooked them up and fought for a while but then the hooks just pulled out. I inspected the hooks and didn't find any scales or anything on them. It was driving me mad!

The other funny thing was just about every fish I did land all took a different fly!!  I caught a fish on the first cast ... then nothing for about 20 casts.  I decided to change flies and then bang ... another fish but on a different fly ... then nothing after about 15 casts, change my fly and then bang another fish.  The fish took gold bead hare and copper, gold bead pheasant tail, green caddis, white caddis, small orange glo bugs, big pink glo bugs.  It alsmot drove me mad trying to figure out what they were taking !!

Other anglers are doing well on wet flies using olive woolly buggers and red or orange rabbits.

(Above) Looking upstream at the Breakfast Pool just after lunch yesterday. I encountered few anglers in the morning but most appeared out of the woodwork in the afternoon.

(Below) Looking upstream at the Judges Pool later in the afternoon.  We escaped most of the rain that Auckland and the Coromandel got over the weekend. As a consequence the river was fishable.

(Below) I picked up a mixture of fish yesterday. Some skinnier looking spent fish and a few good solid jacks. The fish below was a little on the slim side.

(Below) Another spent fish / kelt / slab.  The fish have been knocked around a bit in the river this year due to the number of floods that we have had.  It has been a very wet year so far this year.
