Overcast. No wind as of 9:00am.  The Tongariro is clear and fishable.

A reminder that daylight savings ends this weekend on Sunday 1st April. Don't forget it is the long holiday weekend of Easter this weekend. A bonus score for those of you wanting to head this way to fish.  You get a four day weekend instead of the usual two.

School holidays look like they start on 14th April ending 29th April. These are funny to pick in terms of fishing the river.  Some anglers stay away thinking it is going to be busy only to find it is quieter than normal and other times you think it will be quieter than normal and then it ends up busy?  My suggestion is to just go fishing and in the 18 years I have been doing the website I have always found plenty of space to fish on the rivers by myself.  The small lakes are still open and there are plenty of river mouths to fish as well.

Now is a good time to secure a big brown in the Tongariro if that is what you are wanting to catch. They aren't known as " big old wile browns " for nothing ..... frustrating as hell sometimes but ... worth the challenge.  Some like the challenge ... others give up in 5 minutes and head home saying " there's nothing out there! "  I remember a few years ago my neighbor went out on Lake Taupo for a fish .... he caught his bag limit in half and hour and was back home not long after .... I said to him  " well that ruined your DAY of fishing then didn't it ? "

Sporting Life,

Thanks for your help with selecting the right flies for river mouth fishing. They were spot on. I had a wonderful day at Western Bays on Tuesday.

Regards,

Jason
