Overcast start here in Turangi today. No wind as of 9:30am.  The Tongariro is clear and fishable.

I decided to have a look at fishing the Tauranga-Taupo River yesterday. I wanted to save a trip up there for a nice sunny day as I like to look and spot fish.   My plan was a cunning one .... knowing the Tongariro would be busy I also thought that would be the case at the TT as well.  However my plan was to have a sleep in and let most of the anglers head up the river and then catch all of the fish and then head back so that when I started most anglers would have gone and I would have most of the river to myself. I arrived at the carpark to find 12 cars there.  Usually your heat sinks when you see this many but in the past I always think " you must be better than those who have gone before you ". So, off I went.

I started fishing as soon as I hit the river.  Yesterday morning the fog and cloud hovered around but this burnt off later in the day.   The river was still running pretty high and I had a few hairy crossings where I thought I was going to be bowled over.  The force of the river was quite strong. The river still had some colour to it from last weeks rain.

My suspicions were correct.  I saw quite a few anglers head back home with what looked like 6 bag limits hanging off their sides ... it's hard work carrying fish like that miles back to the car ;-)

(Below) I had a bit of a slow start but managed to land this fish. I had a a few more takes but the current was swirly and I missed a few other takes.

(Below) I had a bit of a slow start and was wondering why this was the case ... I think it was due to me packing one of these for my lunch. The fishing improved greatly after I devoured this.

(Below) This was a superb fresh conditioned hen that I landed.  There was a lot of weight behind trying to land this one.

(Below) Another nice looking run. The flat light of the overcast conditions makes it quite hard to see into the water.  That's why i like heading up here on a sunny day.

(Below) I only got up to here before heading back home.

(Below) Another rainbow.  I hooked a few, lost a few, enjoyed the sunny day and sitting on the river bank eating my lunch ..... how many did I get for the day ..... enough ;-)

(Below) I always like seeing these track markers with the picture of the sauntering anglers with the little one having their fish swinging along side them.  I did see most other anglers sauntering back to their car swinging their fish ... just like this picture.
