Fine with cloud. No wind as of 9:00am.  This may increase later in the day. All rivers are clear. The cicadas are chirping madly now that the sun has finally made an appearance this summer and the heat is up to the 27 degree celcius.

The Auckland Anniversary holiday weekend came and went.  It was good to see plenty of anglers out and about on the Tongariro. I managed to get out for a fish for a couple of days which was good.  I had to catch fish in between swimmers, kayakers, rafters, swimming dogs etc but still managed to snag a few.

On Saturday I just hung around town and fished the Breakfast Pool, Major Jones Pool and Hydro Pool. I hooked about 10 or 12 fish. Lost a few and landed about 7 or 8 ... I think.

Fish took flashback pheasant tail, gold bead pheasant tail, black bead hare and copper bomb and green beetle.

(Above & Below) Most rainbows in the Tongariro at the moment are resident or recovering fish from the spawning. There are also some fresh run browns that look huge in the river at the moment too. The summer fishing is different in the respect that these fish are into feeding on the abundant insect life. You must be aware that they differ from fresh run fish during the spawning runs.  The summer fishing on the Tongariro River is fantastic in the respect that the fish will rise to the dry fly, and generally be feeding. I love fishing the bright sunny days. These days also make it easier to spot fish.
