The coming Winter season with the spawning runs (around June-October) should provide some excellent fishing, providing ample fly fishing opportunities in the Tongariro River and surrounding areas. In the Taupo area we have two main times for fishing. The Winter fishing is mostly done in the rivers with the Tongariro River being the most popular river for anglers to fly fish, being a Mecca for some. Rainbow and brown trout run from Lake Taupo up the rivers so that they can spawn. The other popular river to fish is the Tauranga-Taupo River, this being much smaller than the Tongariro River. The Lake Taupo fishery is a carefully managed self regenerating fishery but can be fished all year round. Some rivers are permanently closed to fishing for spawning purposes. Other rivers have their extreme upper reaches closed for most of the Winter to allow for spawning and self regeneration to begin. The other main period for fishing is during the Summer months (November-February). This fishing is mainly conducted on Lake Taupo with boats, around the shores of Lake Taupo and at the river mouths entering Lake Taupo. There is also an increase in back country fishing where the upper reaches of rivers can then be fished. Also during this time the Tongariro River produces some good dry fly activity. The fish that have spawned in the rivers head back to Lake Taupo where they recover and begin feeding on Smelt (very small fish similar to Whitebait). They chase schools of the Smelt into the shallows where it easy for the fly fisherman to catch them. Boating is very popular on the Lake in the Summer months with good catches reported by Harling, Trolling, Jigging or using a Downrigger. Once fat from feeding and recovered enough they wait until the Winter months for the right conditions to head back up the rivers to spawn.
Each person who wishes to fish in the Taupo Fishery must be licenced. The fees for the licences are as follows:
| Adult Season: 1 July-30 June: | NZD$88.00 |
| Adult Week: | NZD$37.00 |
| Adult 24 Hour: | NZD$16.50 |
| Child Season: 1 July-30 June: | NZD$12.00 |
| Child 24 Hour: | NZD$4.50 |
A child is classed as being less than 16 years of age or attending school full time as a pupil. This does not include tertiary students aged 16 or more.
The bag limit for trout in the Taupo District is 3 per person per day with the minimum size for these fish being 40cm.
Fishing may only occur between the hours of 5:00am and Midnight..
