Fine and sunny start to the day here in Turangi today. Most mornings this week have been hovering around 4 degrees celcius when I have opened the curtains … with the exception of the morning where we had a good frost. No wind as of 8:45am. The Tongariro is clear and fishable.
Some anglers are hanging out for rain but as I said to another angler the other day …. “Why do you want to fish in the rain ?” Me personally I would rather fish in these nice sunny days that are nice and crisp to start with and fairly warm during the day. The fish are there, anglers are seeing them but some are not having much “luck”. Over the years I have found that “luck” really is an excuse not to catch fish …. anglers would be “more than lucky” to get some lessons on what to do in these conditions;-) Still, the anglers who are not “lucky” but who are wise are doing quite well 😉 In these low clear conditions, I fish to the fish I cannot see and I let my flies “do the looking”.
With the level of Lake Taupo being low then now is a good chance to head to the river mouths with a good drop off. Try the Delta, Waimarino and Tauranga-Taupo mouths. Reports from the Delta indicate some really nice fish and fish that are still smelting.
(Below) A selection of flies to use at river mouths and deep drop offs for lake Taupo …. possibly to increase your ” luck ” 😉
