Happy New Year to you all !! I wonder if this one will go as fast as the other one !!!
What a great start to the New Year. I have my Japanese mate Hide ( pronounced Hee Day ) here in Turangi at the moment. I met Hide many years ago now … I think in about 2001. He is a really keen fisherman sometimes he had only 5 days leave and would fly from Japan and fish two days and then fly back !! He will fish all day and most of the night. I took a picture of him back in 2002 and he appeared on the cover of the Target Taupo Magazine ( pictured below ) … back in the day when everyone fished in Neoprene waders !
We went out for a fish on the Tongariro River on 31st December ( last year 😉 now ) … just a couple of days ago and had a big bomb up on the Tongariro. We hooked into about 20-30 fish for the day. Mind you he picked me up at 8:30am in the morning and we stopped fishing at about 10pm after the rise stopped …..
I don’t fish much these days because if I did there wouldn’t be many fish for Andrew Burden to catch ;-). We basically nymphed for the day and about 90% of the fish took a Prince Nymph or a black nymph. For us, the fish ignored the caddis nymphs. A good mixture of fish with a few hooked and lost and a few very skinny looking spent fish.
We are starting to feel the effects of age when it comes to fishing. Hide sums it up pretty good. Hide says “My mind says Go, Go, Go but my body says No, No, No ! ”
(Below) After a very successful day nymphing we went out for the evening rise and I landed another 7 on the Sporting Caddis.
