Now we are back into level 3 there has been a few more local anglers out and about on the Tongariro, with some nice fresh fish being landed along with a few more coloured up specimens that are making their way back down to the lake. The boys at the shop have been getting out with the trout spey gear and having a ball swinging up some really hard fighting rainbows, and while it tends to be not as effective as nymphing numbers wise there isn’t much that gets the heart racing more than a big grab and blistering first run on a swung fly! Our most successful pattern has been the standard olive wooly bugger, a consistent performer on the Taupo tributaries.
The shop revamp has been progressing nicely with our new Redington, Patagonia and fly line wall starting to take shape and we are very excited to get it all finished and looking sharp! We are looking forward to catching up with everyone when the lockdown is lifted, I’m sure there are plenty of anglers raring to go as soon as possible so we will hopefully see you all in store or on the river!
The shop is open however as per our last report we are doing contactless ordering, payment and pick up only. Thankyou to everyone for your patience and understanding with this, it all seems to be running smoothly but we are definitely looking forward to getting back to standard operating, whenever that may be!
We had another restock of the very popular McLean’s net magnets and retainers the day before lockdown started, and with opening day not too far away it is the perfect time to go through your kit and start preparing for the summer months ahead so if you’re worried about losing a net to the blackberry etc. these will fit the bill perfectly.
With the spring season starting and the weather warming up ill be looking to replace my older floating lines ready for some dry fly action, looking forward to giving the Rio Gold lines with the new Slickcast coating a run! We have had fantastic feedback from customers that have purchased lines with the new coating with most commenting on just how slippery the line is and how well it shoots so it’s one product to keep in mind if your old line has passed its used by date!
