What a wild night it was here in Turangi last night. The wind screamed through the town! But ….. upon waking ….. sunshine and the wind has eased somewhat. It should be a nice day to be out and about on the rivers today. The wind may still be a little gusty at times and is expected to go SW.
Yesterday was a very cold day for anglers to be on the river …. there was a real sense of “WINTER” fishing even though we are in the Spring. Our Spring can sometimes unleash wild and cold weather with days that are very warm in amongst them. The warm days gives people the thought that we are almost into Summer, however caution should be taken that the weather can change quite quickly. Make sure you have warm and waterproof jackets handy.
The boat fishing has eased somewhat on Lake Taupo with the rough weather with few reports coming in. The jigging should start to pick up this month but the last two months has seen some really great fishing out on Lake Taupo trolling. Pink / Orange / and black and gold toby lures have been the favourites with the odd Spotty Gold and Traffic Light in the mix. The boat anglers have been reporting some really great conditioned fish over this time.
Beware of Spring Floods. If we get one it will be nice to flush the trout from the upper reaches into the town area, however too many and they have the potential to blow the fish back out to Lake Taupo. As a river angler we want the fish to stay in the river over the next few months to begin feeding for the dry fly season. If they get blown out of the rivers then not so good. However this may benefit the boat angler. They would prefer to be blown out into the Lake early in the Spring so they have time to fatten and recover before the Christmas and New Year Holidays. If the fish get knocked back to the lake en masse then the boat anglers start to complain that they will catch mostly spent or recovering fish … no need to panic … understanding how the fishery work is an important tool for the angler.
We have a short handled landing net that was handed into the shop the other day …. if you think it is yours then call us on 07 386 8996 or email here at firstname.lastname@example.org ….. sorry Harvey but it isn’t your one.
