Highly Fishable

A fine and sunny start to the day here in Turangi today. Wow! We had a front blast through the town yesterday afternoon with really strong winds and heavy rain.  This put the river up to 30 cumecs overnight but it has dropped back to 26 today.  This wee flush will have put some fresh water into the river and really would have been the equivalent to you dipping your big toe into an Olympic sized swimming pool … ie it will have done nothing to the level !  This will have moved a few more fresh browns up river.  They will be looking to feed on the baby rainbow fry that are lining the edges of the river like shoals of whitebait. If there is a little tinge of colour to the river then the nymphing should be dynamite today.

I drove past the Tauranga-Taupo carpark the other day and logging operations have begun to clear the pine forest all along the entrance track to the TT carpark.  They are going hard out there but the road to the carpark remains closed until this finishes, so a good walk is necessary from the Challenge Petrol Station for those of you who are keen to remain slim and trim.

Neil was out early this morning to check on the river.  He took these pictures beside the SH1 road bridge at about 8:15am this morning. The day is nice and the river looks fantastic.
