Overcast and a little humid this morning here in Turangi today.  No wind as of 9:30am.  The Tongariro is clear and fishable and flowing at 22.3 cumecs. It looks like we could be in for a bit of rainfall over the next few days. This will most likely be enough to dampen down the dust.

The Cicadas have pretty much gone quiet at the moment.  Hopefully …… fingers crossed some moisture over the next few days plus some heat after that will spring them back into life again.  As I said in a few reports ago you really need these to be in the “Goldilocks Zone”…. everything has to be “just right ” for them .  Also you may only get a two week window here in Turangi to really get the chance for the trout to come up to get them.

Anglers have generally reported catching fish on the dry on smaller ones, plus there seem to have been quite a few good sized Mayflies hatching at times. Nymphing has been good and in general the wetline seems to have picked up some big fish.

Still, plenty of big fish reported in the Tongariro. Heaps of browns now plus some really nice silver rainbows.

River mouths have been reported as good with fish taking smelt patterns ( Mini Grey Ghosts).  The Delta is worth a look with either smelt (Grey Ghosts, Wriggle Tail Smelt)  or booby patterns.  Still a mixture of fish reported by anglers from some very nice ones to skinnier fish.  Still, they seem to be giving anglers plenty of action and no one really seems to be reporting struggling to catch fish.

This is the last holiday weekend for a while and my pick is that if you want to fish the Tongariro and basically have it to yourself then arrive next week 😉

For those who are Retired or what I am turning into …… Old and Tired 😉 ….. my suggestion would be to make the most of the next month or two before the cold weather arrives and you have Mr Arthur Itis knocking on your door.  Make the most of the nice warm sunny weather and come and target some of the massive browns that are in the river at the moment.  If you have never caught a brown trout then the next few months is your chance and it will never be easier !  The only things you have to avoid at this time of the year are Sun Rays and Mosquitoes.
