It has been a very mixed bag of weather today here in Turangi with some very strong wind gusts and sunshine mixed in with an occasional heavy shower coming through. The river has been pretty quiet over the last couple of days with not many anglers out and about, especially for a school holiday so its definitely a good time to be trying for a fish!

Most anglers in today have reported catching a few more coloured fish like the one pictured below I picked on the spey gear making their way back down to the lake as is typical for this time of year. There are good numbers of juvenile rainbows in the shallows in the upper river already which is a bit earlier than usual so fingers crossed the browns that predate them wont be far off either. Unweighted mayfly patterns such as a size 12 or 14 pheasant tail behind a heavier fly will be a good place to start if you are getting on the water at the moment as the mayfly hatches continue to ramp up in the evenings. For those looking to start their night time fishing we have just had a restock with some fantastic LedLenser head torches including the H5R featured below, the new models are now water resistant so if you accidentally drop it into the water you wont have to worry about it shorting out on you!
