Fine and sunny start to the day here in Turangi today. No wind as of 9:00am. Not even a rustle in the leaves …. yet. It is supposed to be calm today but a local effect wind may pick up mid day to mid afternoon.
A nice sunny calm day today would bode well for the dry fly / dropper fishermen on the Tongariro River. I was walking back to work yesterday after lunch and heard a few cicadas chirping in town.
The boat fishing out on Lake Taupo has been reported as really good by the boaties that have managed to get out in the calm over the last few days. Most report plenty of success jigging and most have been really happy with the numbers and the quality of the fish. This bodes well for the coming river season.
A few days ago we had reports that most anglers appeared to be hooking up at Lake Otamangakau as well. Flavours of flies appear to be Red Phesant Tails, Snails and stripping bead headed Slim Shady woolly buggers.
(Below) Local angler Graham Hamilton was in the shop this morning and had been out trolling on Lake Taupo and had caught this nice plump rainbow.
(Below) The fillets from the fish above. These are supurb looking quality. Look at the fat around the belly. These will smoke up just nicely.
