Highly Fishable

Fine and sunny start to the morning here in Turangi today. A strong cold gusty Southerly wind is blasting through Turangi this morning.  The Tongariro is clear and fishable, however an un-verified report from 9:45am has said someone said a slip has come down so the river may have coloured up.

10:00am A report that the river has coloured up with pumice floating past – unfishable – nothing to do with and un-related to the recreational release that is due tomorrow

2:15pm  The river is clear and fishable again.  I took these pictures at about 1:15pm.  Still blowing like crazy though.

We’ve still got plenty of anglers turning up to fish.  Still been quite busy in the shop.  A few more anglers are taking out fistfuls of Wee Wets that seem to have been working well.   While the Mayflies are hatching, this is the time to use them.

Small natural nymphs have been really good too.  Try hare and coppers, pheasant tails, flashback hare’s ears, flashback pheasant tails, C3 Pole Position and in some areas of the big river green caddis.

The angler who lost his keys up at the Tauranga-Taupo the other day has be re-united with them.  The funny thing is he walked into the shop and I said “Can I help you?”.  He said ” I lost my keys up at the Tauranga-Taupo River” and ” I said hang on a minute …. Neil, where are those keys you went and found up there the other day?” and Neil said “There on the floor behind the counter, but he is not due to pick those up until Saturday, he’s early!”

In the meantime the guy who had just come in nearly fell over with a heart attack thinking someone had found his keys until we discovered he was not the guy who’s ones that had been found.  He was another angler who had lost another set !! Anyway I got a call from another angler this morning to say he had found a set of electronic car keys ( in the water ) up at the Tauranga-Taupo river. Wow !!  How is that for lucky.  Two sets of keys lost in the space of a week and two sets of keys that can be re-united with their owners !!

Right …. onto the “Blast from the Past” today on Flashback Friday !

Back in the “Good Old Days” before everyone took offence when anyone said or did anything, I used to put on a report on the 1st of April that used to suck a few anglers in … this is one such report. The Fish were really big back then that you needed some substantial equipment !!  When we were taking these pictures, the angler on the other side of the river made me laugh …. he saw me walk down the bank with the Big Salmon Fiberglass Replica and he leaned that far forward to see what was going on that he nearly fell in !!

These photos were from 1st April 2007 and titled “Big Game Fishing on the Tongariro River “
