Highly Fishable

Fine and frosty start to the day here in Turangi today.  It was -4.1 degrees celcius at 7:47am this morning. No wind as of 9:30am.  The Tongariro river is clear and in a highly fishable condition flowing at 25.9 cumecs.

Anglers seemed to have come out of the woodwork over the weekend.  The shop was flat out and nearly every carpark had plenty of cars in them.  A few of those cars will have been from School Holiday makers doing walks along the river. Saturday was very windy and cold but it wasn’t too bad if you could tuck out of the wind. Sunday was a much nicer calm day.

I managed to get out for a fish over the weekend. I was very disappointed that no volunteers wanted to work for me so I could go fishing during work hours, so I had to go fishing on my days off !!  I’ll post the photos later in the week.

(Below) This is a photo of my thermometer from this morning. It was -4.1 degrees celcius outside at 7:47am.  I was up at 3am and it was -4.2  then.  I wonder what the temperature was about an hour before the 7:47 reading.  I always remember when I was in the Army that the coldest it ever seemed to be was about an hour before sunrise.  During the night it would be freezing but in that last hour before the sun cam up the temperature felt like it would plummet even more, especially at Waiouru …

(Above & Below) A little bit of delayed coverage from over the weekend. These photos are thanks to Jamie Campbell who was one of last years Golden Ticket winners.  Jamie writes:

Hey Jared,

Hope your managing to get some time on the river! Got a couple of hours in and swung a few wet flies in the wind and happy with the results.

Cheers Jamie

(Above & Below) I received this email this morning thanks to James Street.  James looks to have been jigging out on Lake Taupo over the weekend and caught some nice plump fish. James writes:

Still some good fish to be had jigging out on the lake. Not stacked up like in summer but moving around a bit still able to pick up a few. Fish all full of smelt and one had this massive one in it about 4″ long. Regular size smelt beside it .
