Fine and sunny start to the day here in Turangi today. Another nice Spring day. No wind as of 9:00am. The Tongariro is clear and fishable.

Some great Spring fishing conditions at present. More anglers appear to be taking out Natural nymph patters such as Pheasant Tails, Hare and Coppers, Green and White Caddis and Prince Nymphs. It is amazing the change in styles of fishing when the clouds and rain disappear and the sun comes out and the river becomes low and clear. Anglers are preferring 6 or 7lb fluorocarbon in the lower clear conditions.

It looks like the wetliners are doing well on an olive coloured woolly bugger with a whitish grizzle hackle. General reports are the wetliners are picking up the bigger better conditioned fish. The nymphers will generally pick up the slightly less conditioned fish as these ones will be the feeders and possibly have been in the river a wee while, however if you hit the right spot you should still pick up some really nice conditioned fish.

The trolling anglers have mostly taken out the Kilwell black toby with a yellow lightening flash, Kilwell black toby with the silver lightening flash, Kilwell black and gold toby, Kilwell orange and black toby, and green and gold cobra.

(Above & Below) Local fishing guide Bill Grace was out at the Tongariro River delta this morning and picked up quite a few fish. He said that he still thinks there are a lot of rainbows that have yet to run as the hens were quite full of roe.

I think Bill said he has been Guiding on Lake Taupo for about 30 years now. One of the longest times for a fishing guide. Bill specializes in fly fishing the Delta and Jigging. His boat is named ” Old Yella “. If you would like to head out for a fish with Bill give him a call on 07 386 6614 or 027 620 7326.
