Fine but overcast with a thin layer of high cloud today. No wind as of 10:00am this morning. The Tongariro River is clear and highly fishable.
Fingers crossed we get back into a bit of normality and with people able to move around the country now, a few will be heading here to have a flick in the rivers. Now that we are into Level 2 anglers are able to head out on Lake Taupo to fish from boats.
The Blue Pool access road should hopefully be opened up later today which will ease a bit of congestion.
(Above) I went out for a flick on the Tongariro after work yesterday. I decided to have a look at the Shag Pool. 4 casts after starting I managed to land this Rainbow jack. It is nice to get onto fish quickly.
(Below) Landing the fish from the picture above. I caught this one in the murky depths of the Shag Pool. It put up quite a good fight.
(Below) The same fish as above. He took a glo bug.
(Below) Not long after releasing the jack in the picture above I caught this hen. These have been the typical fish I have been catching in the Tongariro since the flood. This one took a small flashback pheasant tail and in actual fact the rest of the fish I caught also took the same fly. I released this fish and while I had my back to the river untangling my fly mess I heard a splash behind me , turned thinking it was a rising fish and what I ended up seeing was a massive Black Shag take off with this fish in the middle of its beak !!!
(Below) I also landed this fish. It was quite a good size.
(Below) And this fish … they all look like older resident fish that have stayed in the river over the Summer and Autumn.
(Above & Below) It was getting a little darker so decided to head back to the car before it got too dark …. however I couldn’t resist having a flick below the Red Hut bridge. About half a dozen casts I landed this fish.
