Fine and sunny start to the day herein Turangi today. No wind as of 9:00am however going by the last few weeks this has picked up mid to late morning to become quite gusty and blustery. A nice cool crisp start to the day here in Turangi this morning.
I went out fishing with a Cousin of mine and his daughter on Tuesday. They have never fly fished before so it was nice to introduce some newbies to how it is done. We went out a little earlier before the evening rise to do a bit of nymphing before the rise started and I said we will then wait for the rise as you get to see where the fish are feeding.
We hooked about 10 nymphing before the rise started. The fish preferred to take my Claret Nymph and Flashback Pheasant tail. Then the rise started and we hooked about another 6 on the Sporting Caddis. Skating the caddis is a very effective method to catch fish. There were quite a few Mayflies hatching just before the Caddis started but the fish were sporadically feeding on them until they change to the Caddis when they go nuts.
(Above & Below) A couple of fish landed on the nymph. There seemed to be plenty of fish around after the flood we got last week and also there were plenty of Maflies hatching. Later in the evening plenty of Caddis hatched as well. the insect life looked to have survived the flood quite ok.
(Below) Pearl and Pete. Pearl was having a ball walking in and out of the water in waders. They both enjoyed their fly fishing experience. There was a little bit of competition between them when it came to winding in the fish ….
(Above & Below) Two really nice fat fish landed on the evening rise skating a Caddis. The last few times I have actually been out fishing I have found in general the better fish have been taken on the rise. Pearl wanted to keep a couple so we donged a couple of fat ones. She named them Freddie and Bobby … but I had to point out to her that they were “Girls” so she renamed them Fredina and Bobbette or something along those lines !!
