I just got back from a lunch break fish on the Tongariro and it was a pearler of a session.

I was straight into strong fighting rainbows.

I took my 9 foot 6 weight single hand rod setup on the reel with a 300 grain Rio Skagit Trout Spey Head attached to 35lb running line combined with backing and the tip was a 10ft Rio Light mow Tip with 7.5ft of floating and 2,5 ft of sink. 4ft of tippet to a Orange beaded Olive Woolly bugger. It worked a treat. I would normally run a lighter Skagit head of around 225 grain but there was a howling wind coming up river and I thought the heavier line might give me a bit more punch into the wind and it did. One of the fish from lunch session in the attached video.

So the Winter Fly Fest is confirmed for Saturday August the 10th. I am still working on Speakers for the day but have some pretty exciting names in the fly fishing world already lined up and more to come. I will have the registration for the day up on Facebook very soon but if you are not a Facebook user you can email me at the shop at sport.life@xtra.co.nz and say you would like to register and I will add your name to the list so you are in the draw for prizes on the day and so we know how many to cater for.

I will head out for an evening session tonight if i don’t get intercepted on the way by a nice cold glass of Waikato Draught…… mmmmmm beeer…. bugger… fishing is doomed.

See you at Sporting Life FIshing Outfitters – Turangi
