Overcast and grey start to the day here in Turangi today.  No sign of rain yet but the roads are wet. No wind as of 9:00am.  The Tongariro is clear and fishable.

Not too many days away until we are at the shortest day of the year. It is pretty dark after I leave work these days.  Oh to be back in daylight savings !! Normally the darkest days are for a couple of weeks after the shortest day and then you start to notice them getting slightly longer as we head to the longest day.  Usually the coldest weather is still to come.

Looks like we could be in for some good rain later this afternoon / overnight ….. bring it on.  This should be a great boost to the river levels for the anglers heading this way for the weekend.

The last few days have had anglers reporting seeing fish ” leaping out of the water ” in front of them.  Not sure why they are doing this.  In the past anglers have reported seeing fish porpoising as they appear to be running up river.  The “leaping” is a different description.

1:00pm Good steady rain has been falling since mid day.

2:40pm Good HEAVY rain is falling.

(Below) A little bit of delayed coverage from Tuesday thanks to Neil. One would say that  “a lot of water has passed beneath the bridge” since these pictures were taken.

(Above)  Looking upstream from the Red Hut Bridge on Tuesday ……. it will still look the same today ….. grey and overcast.

(Below) Looking downstream from the Red Hut Bridge.  If we get heavy overnight rain the river may come up and get some colour to it …..  fingers crossed … get the wetlines / sinking lines ready
