Overcast. No rain as of 9:00am. No wind as of 9:00am. The Tongariro is flowing at about 29 cumecs and is fishable.

I went out for a flick late on Sunday afternoon. I decided to go up and have a look at the Sand and the Fence Pool. I pulled up in the car park to find only one car there. Bonus !! There was a jacket and rod draped on the top of the car with no one in sight. I got myself ready and then an angler came up from the river towards the car. Next thing another angler came up and then another. All hobbling along and of the vintage variety. I thought they were the cast from the Last of The Summer Wine.

The angler in front was carrying a very skinny fish. He said ” I don’t normally take one of these but we haven’t been fishing for years and we are having a bit of a competition so it is the only one we’ve caught so I have to weigh it in “.

I said ” you should poke some stones in it to put a bit of condition on it ” ! It was good to see them out and about.

(Above) Looking upstream to the Sand Pool on Sunday evening.

(Below) The water was quite a dirty colour. I was hoping to find gin clear / emerald green water. However I started fishing and hooked a few and lost a few. The odd Mayfly was hatching periodically through the time that I was there and the odd fish was rising. About one every 15-20 mins but only once. The Mayfly activity should continue to increase towards the end of the month with regular hatches ( flood and weather dependent ). The Mayflies usually hatch before the caddis. They will come online more towards the end of next month.

I didn’t see any other anglers apart from Clegg, Compo and Foggy at the carpark.

(Below) It wasn’t long and I landed a rainbow. Most took naturals. I lost a few fish which may have taken the glo bug but not too sure.

(Above & Below) This fish was a good solid rainbow jack. I covered the water nymphing where I saw a fish rise and not long after hooked this fish.
