Overcast with a STRONG BLUSTERY wind blowing here in Turangi today. The Tongariro is currently flowing at about 25 cumecs and is highly fishable apart from the wind. My suggestion is to give up on the nymphing today and do what everyone did in the old days when it was windy … either stay at home or punch out a wetline.
(Below) A little bit of delayed coverage from Monday when I went up to have a look at the Sand Pool. The picture below is the extreme top of the pool. To the right of the picture is where the Whitikau run ends. The Whitikau stream enters the Tongariro about 120m upstream from here.
(Below) The middle of the Sand Pool. This is such a beautiful spot on the river which generally few anglers ever see or get to. It involves about an 8-10 minute walk. I just love these deep green looking pools. Most anglers struggle to catch a fish in this pool due to the swirly and deep nature of it. Early season it holds few fish but later in the season is quite good.
(Below) The tail of the Sand Pool before is disappears down the white water chute below here.

(Below) Does anyone recognize this pool ?? It isn’t the Sand … where could this be ?
