Fine and sunny start to the day here in Turangi today. A bit of cloud about with the feeling of humidity. The Tongariro is clear and fishable and flowing at 23.8 cumecs.
Many thought Winter had arrived early with the temperatures plummeting yesterday …… long pants and down jackets came out in force … just a nice reprieve from the hot days of last week. At least you can be comfortable sleeping …. This has quietened down the Cicadas but I am sure that once the temperatures climb into next week then they will be going hard. We are forecast to be up to 28 degrees again next week.
No sign of the Passion Vine Hoppers yet but Neil did see one of their young ( Fluffy Bum Aphid ) the other day here in Turangi. I was in Tauranga on my days off on Tuesday and Wednesday and the Adults were landing on me up there. Last year was what I would call a BOOMER year for these and the trout just went nuts on them, but it will be interesting to see what we end up with this year. The Passion Vine Hoppers usually hatch every year but what I have noticed long term living in Turangi with the insects around here is that some years you get few, some years you get some, and other years almost like a plague of them. I would put it down to what sort of weather conditions we have.
Some anglers reported Hover Flies the other day ……. my last recollection of these was when I was a kid growing up here in Turangi. They were kind of like a Bee but would hover in front of your face and zip left or right or up and down …..
1:00pm I heard a few cicadas at lunchtime … reports of fish rising to take them off the top ….
