If the action over the past few days is anything to go by we are going to be seeing some amazing fish by the end of summer! For this early in the season to be seeing such big numbers of large smelt it is shaping up to be a great few months ahead. I shot out after work yesterday with Karl Sawyer for some lake edge action and he nailed this stunning jack which was the pick of the lot, one of the best rainbows I have seen come out of the lake for a while at just over 7lb. The action continued long into the night with a couple of buggered anglers getting back home well after midnight. The coffee is much needed in the shop this morning that’s for sure!
The Tongariro has been continuing to fish well, with the evening rise providing some great action and lots of anglers seeing plenty of fish to the net both via nymphing and dry/dropper during the day also. We have had a mixed bag of weather this week with a bit of rain coming through today however it is getting warmer and warmer so hopefully its not too long till the cicadas start making a regular appearance.
We have had a rod and reel handed in that was found at the Blue Pool carpark yesterday, and also a landing net found at the Reed Pool yesterday evening so if you have lost either of these give us a description of it and we will get it back to you.
I have still been fishing the Rio Elite Indicator line hard recently, putting it through its paces in as many different situations as possible to see how versatile it is and it has been performing extremely well. Being able to launch a big cast quickly with a team of smelt flies at smelting fish has been very beneficial, as well as all the river work we have been doing with it lately swinging wee wets and nymphing etc. I wouldn’t recommend it for fishing to sighted fish with small dry/dropper combos as it does land a little heavy as is to be expected with its taper but for everything else we have used it for it has exceeded expectations. We have received stock of the WF5F as well as the 6, 7 and 8 so check them out on our site or come into the shop for a yarn and we can fill you in on where is fishing well and get you out there and amongst the fantastic fishing that has been going on lately!
Karl hooked up in stunning conditions
An absolute ripper of a rainbow, pulling the lie detector in the Mcleans net handle down to over 7lb. Fingers crossed we see a few of these in the river next winter!!
With the amount of smelt this size the trout were spewing up we are going to be in for one hell of a summer at this rate.
