Overcast and humid here in Turangi this morning. We must have had a little bit of moisture fall overnight. No wind as of 9:00am. The Tongariro River is clear and fishable.
Still getting quite a few reports from the river mouth fishing. Still seems to be quite a few skinny fish reported out there. In amongst them are some good ones. I suppose though, there has been plenty of “action” at catching which is always a bonus. Still a bit up and down on the quality of the fish out boat fishing as well, but this could depend on where you are fishing too and what method.
There have been some nice fish in the Tongariro. The browns have been reported as ” short and plump ” or ” longer and skinnier ” so far this year. Some quite nice silver rainbows in amongst them too. Reports have tapered off a wee bit on the number of “Subway Fish” getting caught. Nymphing has been great using C3 101’s or Pole Positions and Manic’s Simon’s Ugly PT. A few anglers are still dry/dropper fishing and a few have been taking out Passion Vine Hopper dry fly. Reports generally indicate quiet on the evening rise, however when I was out the other evening I did see some really big Mayflies and some smaller ones hatching but nothing seemed interested. It’s been a funny year this year. It seems that things in the river changed a bit after the cold snap that we got when the mountain got some snow three or four weeks ago.
The days are quickly getting shorter too. We are almost at the end of February already with the 1st day of Autumn beginning soon. Even though we have had some warm days this year over-all I would have called it a lot cooler than normal. Also been fairly dry but my lawn is still pretty green which indicates we have had a bit of rain to keep it that way.
(Above & Below) I headed down to the river late yesterday evening to have a look around. A perfect night and didn’t see one angler fishing !! No wind, warm, absolutely stunning.
