Overcast and grey looking start to the day here in Turangi today. A good blustery SE wind is blowing but no rain as of 9:00am. The Tongariro is flowing at about 22.6 cumecs and is highly fishable being clear.
The weekend started off really busy with anglers but yesterday it felt like there was not a Soul on the planet. Not sure where everyone went.
Given the fact that we could be faced with a few windy days coming up, my recommendation would be to get out the wetline and try fishing that method rather than using a big thick floating line and fluffy indicator that will catch the wind more. Some good fish have been reported caught on the wetline over the last week. Still seems to be the olive woolly buggers that anglers are preferring but also slip in a brown one occasionally.
Still plenty of slime on the rocks in the Tongariro which is causing a bit of grief for some anglers who are slipping all over the show. A few are now looking at getting wading sticks to keep their balance ….. believe it or not …. you will reach an age where you will need one 😉 and over the last few months I have delt with a few anglers who have not met Jerry Actrix yet 😉 and are in the middle stages of life …. eyes/vision going and balance going make you a little more cautious when wading. This brings me on to another topic. Anglers often ask me “When is the best time to go fishing?” to which I now usually reply “between the ages of about 7 and 40”.
