Highly Fishable

Fine and sunny start to the day here in Turangi this morning.  No wind as of 9:00am.  The Tongariro River is in a highly fishable condition and flowing at 31.4 cumecs.

Over the last few days, anglers have raided the glo bug department in the flies and have cleaned us out of Green Caddis.  Anglers have been catching fish from the river chokka full of green caddis.  We also had some anglers in the shop yesterday who had found other interesting things in the gut of some of their fish.  These we deemed to be Cicada Larvae.  We suggested that as the river banks collapsed due to the flooding the ones that were closest to the river will have become free and the fish had a field day on them.  This is not the first time I have seen this.

No one really seems to be struggling to catch fish at present .. music to my ears !!! When there are “no fish” out there it is usually everyone else’s fault and the blame has to be directed at something or someone else but never to “The Nut Behind the Butt, or the Dick at the End of the Stick” !!!

(Below) This photo and email were sent in yesterday thanks to Rob and Michelle.  They write:

We took Jared’s advice, had a sleep in, and look what happened!

(Above & Below) These photos were sent in thanks to Chris Higgie.  Looks like him and his mate had a bit of fun.  The picture above & below look to be from the location I call “Zimmer Frame Lane” ….. usually because the average age of anglers down there when I ever go is about 75 plus.  I very rarely fish down here to leave these guys in Peace and Quiet.  It is a great pool to wade for the more Senior anglers as the bottom is usually small stones or gravel and I know that they are unstable on their feet and feel comfortable in these conditions. As Admiral Hickling would put it …. a pool that is ideal for “Octogenarians and Children ” .

A bit of delayed coverage. My mate Gibbo and I were up mid week. We struggled initially, but after adjusting our depth and weight we started hitting them pretty regularly. A special thanks to the DOC ranger at the hatchery for his encouragement and advice.

(Below) You cannot disguise the location of this pool from me Chris 😉
