Highly Fishable

Overcast here in Turangi today.  A good bit of rain during the night has brought the level of the Tongariro River up a Gnat’s Whisker but the river is still highly fishable.  No wind as of 9:00am.

With the level of Lake Taupo being low, anglers are enjoying being able to fish the river mouths with the drop-offs ( Delta, Waimarino and Tauranga-Taupo) with some good reports coming through on those.  A bit up and down for some.  Mixture of Heave and Leave glo bugs, White Boobies, Parsons Glories, Grey Ghosts and Lumo doll flies for the night.

(Below) I received this email and photo over the ANZAC long weekend from Simon Sheppard.  Simon writes:

Hi Jared

Left the kids at home for an hour and half fishing my favourite section of fast water upstream of Red Hut this morning. Busy… got into four fish between 20-21”, they ignored the usually reliable #12 chu ugly and ate the #16 pheasant tail with a red thorax. All released to grow a bit bigger…but do they grow bigger? I reckon I’ve caught close on 90 fish on the Tong and apart from a few 23/24 browns, I’ve seldom caught a rainbow below 19” or above 22“….maybe it’s just me, or that I only fish upstream nymphs and dry?

See you in the shop soon, Simon
