Highly Fishable

Fine and sunny with a VERY GOOD frost this morning.  No wind as of 9:00am.  The Tongariro is clear and highly fishable and flowing at about 22.1 cumecs.

I went out for a bit of an explore yesterday on my day off.  I decided to head up to have a look at the Poutu Pool. The day was nice and sunny with no wind.  When I got there I noticed a pine tree had come down off the Cliff above and is sitting at the tail of the pool. A couple of good sized branches had also landed by the Toi Toi to the left of the picture.  I saw about 4 or 5 fish in here but the water is soooo swirly.  I notice in these lower flows that most of the bigger pools have swirly currents that travel up-river ….. most of the places I fished yesterday had this scenario.  This makes it hard to get a proper drift of your nymphs.

(Below) I picked up this fish on the green caddis – yes Wally they do work 😉

(Below) How many Blue Ducks can you see in the picture below ?

(Below) There were three if you could spot them. They blend in so well with the round Tongariro River boulders.  There were three here but when I first got to the pool there were five in the group.

(Below) Later in the day I picked up this fish, also on a green caddis … Note to self “put your reading spectacles on before taking a photo”.  I’m getting far too many blurry photos these days !!
