Fine and sunny start to the day here in Turangi today. Very cold start with a strong blustery wind. The Tongariro is clear and fishable and flowing at about 22.6 cumecs. Wow! We feel like we are back into Winter with the SE change. Cool … very cool.
With the wind it might pay to wetline the Tongariro or find a sheltered spot to nymph. Some good fish hooked on the wetline in the river over the last few days.
I was out for the evening rise last night but this was rather subdued. A few fish rising in the tail of the pool looking like they were taking just sub-surface. Saw plenty of Mayflies coming off in one part but no fish coming up to take them. Very few caddis on the rocks scurrying around on the edge of the riverbank too. I wonder if this cold blast and snow we got on the Mountain the other day may have cooled things off a bit.
I’ve seen plenty of baby trout in the edges which the bigger fish will be waiting to feed on at first or last light, hence the reason wetlining is good for at this time of the year.
