Highly Fishable

Fine and sunny start to the day here in Turangi today. No wind as of 8:45am. Cool start to the day.  We had big black clouds surrounding Turangi for most of yesterday with the threat of a torrential downpour but it never really eventuated.  We got a little bit later in the evening which was just enough to wet the grass and lawns to make them grow more.  The odd clap of thunder and that was it.

This will have put a little bit of a fresh into the river which is much needed at this stage. Not enough to do anything to the level of the river but will have cooled it down.

Quite a few overseas anglers have been having success fishing the Tongariro.  Nymphing has been popular along with dry fly / dropper combos.  However some anglers have reported seeing few fish while the majority of other anglers have been having a ball.

Just a reminder that the upper reaches of all fishable rivers in the Taupo Fishery open on 1st December which is tomorrow.

Also a reminder for those of you heading to Turangi to fish that you need a TAUPO DISTRICT fishing licence … not a FISH AND GAME one. Both are sperarate licences and do not work in each others areas.

These licences are all online now and you can purchase prior to your arrival here in New Zealand / Turangi to fish.  Don’t forget to select Resident or Non Resident.

(Below) The following pictures are thanks to Jens Muller-Buckland who looks to have had a bit of luck on the Tongariro River today. Anglers are enjoying a bit of sight fishing at the moment.  The river is crisp and clear and this is even easier when thesun comes up.  For those who don’t sight fish then use your flies to look for fish …. as they may be in water you can’t see them in 😉
