I headed down to the Major Jones Bridge this morning to check in and see how the works are progressing, and hopefully catch up with a few anglers to hear how their morning had been. They’ve started clearing trees around the area where the new bridge will go, and it’s definitely quite a change from how it used to look. That said, it seems like good progress is being made. The bridge remains open for anglers and others to use, which is great to see.
On the bridge, I bumped into Gordon from Wellington. He said it had been hard going lately, but still well worth the trip north. The clear water and sunny days have definitely made conditions more challenging, although that didn’t stop him from getting on the water early this morning despite the frost. Hopefully the cloud cover today, along with the odd bit of drizzle, will help improve the fishing conditions. There were already a few rods in the water when I arrived, which was great to see.

Yesterday, Hamish headed out to get some intel from anglers on the river and ran into a few who said it had been a bit tough with the sunny skies and clear water. Fish were being caught, but it took a bit of effort to find them. On the bright side, Hamish managed to snap some fantastic pictures, capturing both the action on the water and just how stunning the river has been looking lately.

Looking Ahead: With the chance of a little cloud and drizzle today, conditions may improve for those keen to get out. If you’re planning a trip, early mornings could still be productive, but keep an eye on the water clarity and adjust tactics as needed. And of course, don’t forget to take a moment to enjoy the scenery. The river’s looking spectacular right now.
Tight Lines everyone!
