Weather: Overcast & Still

Tongariro River Flow: 26.1 cumecs (m³/s)

Welcome to the weekend team, some great reports still coming in of fresh fish throughout all the local river systems. I headed out yesterday for the last few hours of daylight and was pleased to find some fresh silver fish in the upper Tong on the go-to green caddis patterns, of which we have plenty in store.

I have been having great fun learning to Spey fish, with the 11ft, 4wt Redington Claymore Spey Rod & Rio Skagit head with the Rio T8 Mow tip, which I've found isn't too heavy for the low water. I have been using smaller natural green woolly buggers, with both rabbit & marabou in the low clear water. Spey fishing is great fun and a really nice change of style from nymphing, dry dropper and stream mouth swinging which have been my go-to styles for summer and autumn. Come chat to us in store if you're keen to give the spey fishing a crack this winter.

Keep moving through the pools, runs & tails to find the fish. When you find one, there often a few more in the same spot! Remember not to wade through the fish, "fish your feet" first as they're often sitting in shallow water when they haven't been disturbed.

Happy fishing guys! See you out there,

Rosie
