Tongariro River Flow: 41.7m3/sec

Weather: Cloudy with light showers of rain

Important: Tomorrow there will be a scheduled recreational release seeing an increase in flow on the Tongariro, so be aware that the river may rise at anytime so avoid crossing, fishing from an island and deep wading. The river will still be fishable although debris may come through, so take care when wetlining.

Yesterday I joined Bre and Josh for a day on the Tongariro, we were greeted by the sunshine and had ourselves a ball hooking rainbows at their various stages of the spawning run. Most were large although quite dark and sharp-toothed😁, there were some skinny jacks and the odd fresh run rainbow. A pink beaded Carpet Caddis Theresor globug worked well in the early morning and as for the afternoon fish were taking black or copper bead caddis variations in small or large sizes. Bre spent most of the day practicing with the double-handed gear following on from a day spent learning the ropes with Connor, and fair to say Bre's determination paid off 😎
Once things warmed up we noticed a few fish rising and a couple of mayfly hatches, so if you're after some surface feeders there's opportunities out there.
