December has arrived and with it comes the sunshine! It is a bluebird day here in Turangi with a slight breeze. The Tongariro is on the drop and currently sitting at 34.3 m3/sec. The Sun will present plenty of sight fishing opportunity for those wanting to do some dry dropper fishing and the slight green tinge that the river is carrying should make the fish easier to fool. I had a little taste of some dry fly fishing yesterday, size 14 CDC caddis worked well on these fish sipping in close to the bank. It was a good reminder not to charge out into the middle of the river at this time of year.
Before the recent rain there was a little bit of activity starting to brew around the stream mouths that enter Lake Taupo. It would be worth going out and poking around with this nice weather (you might come across a brown trout or two). Smelt patterns have worked well during the day for both rainbow and brown trout and woolly buggers and lumo patterns at night.
We have both the Guideline Experience Vest and Guideline Experience DW Vest available instore and online. The last batch of these vest we received sold out. They are sleek in design, functional and made to a high quality. A perfect Christmas gift for any unorganized fly fisher in your life. Click the links to check them out.
The weather looks like it is going to be stunning throughout the weekend and into early next week. Hopefully it brings more sight fishing opportunities in the river and draws more fish toward the river mouths. Tim, Neil and I (otherwise known as TNT) are in store today, come in and say hello, pick our brains and buy some of our secret flies.
