Reports coming through the shop today have been decent. Still with the usual stories of small Glo-Bugs in the morning and switching to naturals or mayfly imitations as the day warms up. Our favourites have still been the C3 Pole Position, Red Bead H&C, or the Habanero Caddis. The fish are being caught all over the rivers, from down Blue Pool Road to the end of Grace Road.
Our mate Sam was out yesterday and managed to pull off his first fish on the fly rod. A beautiful fish at that. Looks to be on a small orange glo-bug. Well-done Sam! We are stoked for you mate. See you here next time.
We hope many of you were out there for opening day, enjoying the newly opened rivers. Although some of you may have been affected by the bad weather, which is nothing new for opening day.
I managed to get away for a few days and dust off the #5 weight LPX Tactical after its winter hiatus and had a lot of fun casting dry-fly dropper rigs to very behaved fish, deep up a river valley. Fish were surprisingly healthy, and well-conditioned for this time of year.
We have been focusing more on the summer fly ordering, getting in a lot of the classic dry flies and nymphs. My favourite all-round dry fly has been the C3 Churnobyl UV in Black, it floats extremely well and floats a #10 C3 101 with no worries. The Churnobyl fly also acts as a really good indicator when targeting more spooky fish on the local rivers when they are low and clear, or when fishing the shallows of the lake (It also gets eaten a lot throughout the summer).
I asked Tim what the fish are up to, he said "They are facing up-stream".
Good luck out there everyone, stay safe in the back country. Always remember to check the weather upstream of where you intend to fish when in the back country.
Let us know how you get on.
Cheers!
