Early summer is the best time to explore the local stillwater options in the Taupo area. Lake Taupo is the most well-known Stillwater, providing opportunities for fish-catching: trolling, hauling, and jigging. Walking the shoreline with fly fishing setups and targeting smelting fish is also a great option.
Lake Otamangakau Is known for its ability to grow trophy trout, with every cast, an opportunity to catch a 10+ pound fish. It has not been easy lately; however, within the next few months, we expect the water temperature to warm up and damsels to become a significant part of those trout's food source.
Lake Rotoaira is excellent for both fly fishing and spin fishing. Trolling and hauling in the drop-offs of the lake can make for a productive session. For fly fishing, both stripping buggers and fishing nymphs under indicators can produce good numbers of fish. The trout in Lake Rotoaira taste excellent if you're interested in eating them.
Lake Kuratau is an excellent lake for catching fish; although there are few large fish in the lake, it can be a fun place to fish around, see a couple of fish, and have a good time.
