Tongariro River Flow: 38.1 cumecs (m3/sec) (fluctuations expected with rain on and off)
It's certainly an exciting time to be in the Central Plateau!! Our still water - Lake Rotoaira (not included in the Taupo district Licence) & Lake Otamangakau are open and fishing well, with Lake Kuratau opening on October 1st, along with lots of the backcountry! We can't wait! Here's our Gary with one of his beautiful browns from the big Lake O.
We're expecting big fresh runs still to come up the Tongariro and the Tauranga Taupo with the current & expected rain. This will continue to push up good numbers of fresh, fit, fighting silver fish.
On warmer sunny afternoons, mayfly have been spotted hatching and it won't be long before we're seeing a bit more consistent warm weather to wake up the insect life and the fun of emerger and dry fly fishing is all on. Good numbers of recovering fish should start looking up soon, rising for excellent evening caddis hatches in shallow water.
Get ready for summer with our smelt flies, caddis & mayfly patterns in store. Have you got a summer line sorted? We recommend the RIO Premier Gold Floating Line, a well-rounded presentation line for summer dry fly action as well as for nymphing year round.
And with the warmer weather on the horizon, fish chasing smelt along the lake edges & stream mouths will see us out there chasing those hard-hitting hungry rainbows & browns!
Great reports coming in from anglers across the region, with plenty of chunky silver fish being landed regularly! Don't let the rain put you off, the conditions are fantastic! Both wetlining and nymphing will provide in these conditions.
Keep enjoying the fishing team, see you out there!
